The annual Montreal May Day disfunction took place in the city's downtown this weekend near Place du Canada, with the event turning violent.
Montreal police (SPVM) said that the use of "chemical irritants" became necessary after protestors began throwing rocks.
One man was arrested for assault with a weapon against a police officer, and a dozen criminal investigations were opened by police.
Video shows protestors carrying flags of Communist nations, and burning American flags.
One officer was injured as well as one citizen, though the condition of the two is not known.
CTV News reports that a police spokesperson said that rocks were thrown through windows of businesses, and that property was graffitied.
