The news cycle continues to get stranger by the hour. Along with the revelation that prime minister, Justin Trudeau, had worn brownface as a highschool teacher and blackface as a student, Cloverdale-Langley City candidate, Tamara Jansen, has also been shown photographed at an event with performers in blackface.
The photograph was taken around 2016 while Ms. Jansen was attending what seemed to be a Dutch heritage Christmas event. The blackface character “Zwarte Piet,” is a traditional part of celebrations originating from the 16th century when such a portrayal was not considered offensive.
Recently, and after allegations of “Zwarte Piet” being a racist, archaic tradition, Dutch commentators and politicians have argued that the black make-up is supposed to represent soot, not a black skin tone. Many parades in the Netherlands plan to replace the blackface portrayal of Zwarte Piet with the updated soot version.
The Conservative Party has confirmed that Jenson was at the event, but denies that Jenson wore makeup like the performers she was photographed with.
There is little doubt that Tamara Jansen will be facing scrutiny for the photograph, but it is also likely this instance will be overshadowed by the prime minister’s own make-up controversies.
