Conservative Members of Parliament Marty Morantz and Pierre Paul-Hus responded to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to welcome former Green MP Jenica Atwin into the Liberal Caucus.
"Justin Trudeau has once again welcomed an anti-Israel MP into the Liberal ranks. Jenica Atwin, who is outspoken about her anti-Israel position, recently suggested Israel is an apartheid state, committing widespread human rights abuses,” said Marty Morantz. "Ms. Atwin will be in good company in the Liberal Party of Canada Caucus."
The statement then goes on to name other anti-Israel MPs, such as:
- Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport, tried to ensure that former Toronto Police Chief, and now senior Trudeau Cabinet Minister, Bill Blair withdrew his support for the “Walk for Israel” parade.
- Faycal El-Khoury attended multiple events with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, a foreign political organization that refers to Israel as the Zionist enemy, a term frequently used by antisemites.
- Sameer Zuberi led a campaign to ban a Jewish student group from enjoying status at Concordia University on the grounds that the group compared suicide bombers who target and kill Israelis to white supremacists.
"We can’t have more of the same anti-Israel sentiment from Justin Trudeau and the Liberals,” said Pierre Paul-Hus. “The decision to welcome Ms. Atwin into the Liberal caucus is especially problematic given the rising number of hate crimes and antisemitic attacks committed against Jewish Canadians."
"If you aren’t concerned about addressing hate and aren’t in favour of Israel’s right to exist then you have three parties to choose from. If you are, there is only one choice, Erin O’Toole and the Conservative Party of Canada. Canada’s Conservatives will always stand with the people of Israel, and the democratically-elected Israeli government that we are proud to call our friend and ally," concluded Morantz.
Atwin's move will leave the Greens with just two MPs—Elizabeth May and Paul Manly—as party leader Annamie Paul lost her first election in Toronto Centre to Marci Ien of the Liberals.
Atwin's departure comes as the Greens attempt to find their ground on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that arose last month.
Trudeau welcomed Atwin with a statement that was released shortly after it was made public that she would join the Liberals.
"With her tireless and effective advocacy on priorities like climate action, mental health, reconciliation, and making life more affordable for families, Jenica Atwin is respected by her constituents and all of her colleagues as a champion for real change," said Justin Trudeau. "I’m looking forward to working even more closely with Jenica to continue delivering support for the people of Fredericton and building a stronger, better, and more resilient Canada."
