CTV has released multiple articles condemning beachgoers for celebrating Canada Day, going as far as to call Ontarians "reckless" for ignoring social distancing measures but oddly, when the network reported on recent protests in Toronto there was no mention of physical distancing whatsoever.
When covering the protests downtown Toronto where “Thousands of people packed the streets,” CTV released a 1,400 word report on the gathering, providing multiple pictures of the packed streets where nobody was adhering to physical distancing measures.
The network released many articles shaming people for attending the beaches both before and after Canada Day though when other gatherings occurred, it appeared to completely forget about the measures.
One Twitter user wrote, “Why shaming people who want a break from this g*****n quarantine! I also spent Canada Day at the Beach and it was so beautiful and relaxing sitting on the sand, watching my son play with his friends, etc. It is just too bad that so many people live close to Wasaga Beach”
Some of the angry backlash came after CTV quoted Deputy Fire Chief Craig Williams in some of their article titles, calling the way beachgoers conducted themselves “human behaviour at its worst.”
Another user sarcastically wrote, “When I lived in Cambodia I witnessed child slavery each and everyday. Thankfully they are forced to work in the mines, brothels, and rice fields, safe from the people at the beach. Holy moly CTV News has lost their minds.”
When speaking on the issue, Ontario Premier Doug Ford told people to enjoy the beaches but to use "common sense."
"We aren't going to be closing any Ontario provincial beaches right now," he said. "Then again, I just ask the people for common sense, you go to a packed beach, find another place if it's jammed packed."
