D.C. Mayor asks DHS to take "additional steps" in ensuring security for inauguration

Democrat Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in an interview Sunday with CBS's "Face the Nation" that she is calling for more security preparations ahead of the January 20 presidential inauguration.

Bowser tweeted a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, urging the department to "adjust its approach to the Inauguration in several specific ways."

These extra security measures are requested in anticipation of more violence and civil unrest in the streets of D.C. following the siege of the Capitol building that occurred on Jan. 6.

"I'm requesting from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that they take additional steps, including expanding the length of the time that this national special security event is in place," Bowser said in the interview.

"Further, I am asking that they extend the perimeter of their coverage area for this national security special event, which is the inauguration, to include the Capitol," she continued.

Bowser added that she will be sending Trump a letter ahead of the inauguration requesting an emergency declaration for the city in advance to allow for further preemptive coordination with federal law enforcement.

Bowser reportedly requested assistance ahead of the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol from the D.C. National Guard. The Pentagon provided 340 National Guard personnel in accordance with her request. Now, some 6,200 National Guard troops from several states have been activated to assist with D.C. law enforcement until after the inauguration.
