Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has been accused of stoking riots in his state after tweeting about the death of Daunte Wright, a black man who died after being shot by police and crashing his car on Sunday.
"[My wife] Gwen and I are praying for Daunte Wright's family as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement," Walz tweeted on Sunday.
"Governor, your words fuel fire for protesters," responded the Saint Paul Republicans Twitter page. The group said that the Governor especially should be waiting to see the results of the investigation into the shooting before drawing conclusions about what took place.
Rioting quickly followed the police shooting in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis. Protesters attacked police vehicles and followed police back to the Brooklyn Center precinct. Later in the evening, numerous stores such as GameStop and Walmart were being looted by rioters.
Rioters vandalized businesses, clashed with police, and launched fireworks as police responded with tear gas and flash bangs.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliot eventually declared a curfew in the city to help quell the violence.
