House Democrats introduced a bill that would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act, preventing future presidents from lowering the refugee admissions cap below 125,000 per year.

The bill, known as the 'Lady Liberty Act of 2021,' is sponsored by more than 50 House Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee.

In short, bill H.R. 977 aims to "amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide for a minimum number of refugees who may be admitted in any fiscal year after fiscal year 2022, and for other purposes."

The act would amend Section 207(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act which states, "in any fiscal year after fiscal year 1982 shall be such number as the President determines" and replace it with the following, "except that in any fiscal year after fiscal year 2022, such number may not be less than 125,000, without regard to whether or not the President makes any determination."

This means that a president will be required to take in no less than 125,000 refugees per fiscal year, thus taking away any president’s authority to decide on the number of refugees deemed appropriate by their administration.

To compare, former President Trump capped the admissions of refugees out at 15,000.
