Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called out a journalist for using the euphemism “gender-based care” to refer to sex changes during a press conference Wednesday.
When a journalist posed a question regarding “gender-based care,” DeSantis replied by asking if the term meant “sex-change operations," before going on to elaborate on all the ways the state of Florida is working to protect youth from becoming victims of the medical sex change experiment.
"What do you mean by gender-based care? You mean like sex-change operations?" asked DeSantis. "I don't think we use that term. You used it, so I'm asking you to define it. Do you include puberty blockers in that?"
DeSantis then went on to explain that doctors are giving teenagers puberty blockers despite there being no evidence to support such a treatment, and added that any doctor attempting to perform a sex change on a minor in the state of Florida would lose their medical license. This was met with applause from the assembled crowd.
“When you’re talking about publicly funded institutions, those are not things that I think are an appropriate use of your tax dollars,” said the governor.
DeSantis also brought up the subject of detransitioners, and how young people who were allowed to undergo experimental sex changes are now speaking out about the regret that they feel. In October, the Florida Medical Board heard powerful testimonies from several detransitioners about the damage done to them by so-called gender-affirming healthcare providers who allowed them to consent to irreversible procedures such as cross-sex hormones and double mastectomies when they were young, vulnerable, and in a state of distress.
Citing the recent systematic reviews undertaken in other nations, and the resulting pivot away from puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in Sweden, DeSantis explained how gender dysphoria resolves for most by the time they are adults.
“The way to deal with that is to provide whatever counseling is needed, not to hack off their body parts. That is not a solution to the problem; that is mutilation, and it is wrong,” he concluded.
