Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday days after he attended an event at the Capitol with President Joe Biden. It's said that this happened despite his vaccination status.
"Secretary Mayorkas tested positive this morning for COVID-19 after taking a test as part of routine pre-travel protocols. He is experiencing only mild congestion; he is fully vaccinated and will isolate and work at home per CDC protocols and medical advice," DHS spokesperson Marsha Espinosa tweeted.
Contact tracing was underway as of Tuesday morning as part of routine pre-travel protocols, according to a statement by a DHS spokesperson provided to Fox News.
The last time that Mayorkas and Biden were seen together was the 40th Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service at the Capitol on Saturday.
Images from the occasion as pointed out by Fox New show how close Mayorkas was to Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the outdoor event, unmasked.
"To Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas, thank you for being here and for the great job you're doing for us. Thank you very, very much. And it's a tough job," Biden told him, mentioned Mayorkas by name at the event.
But reassurances were made by the White House that there isn't any concern.
According to CNN, one of the consequences of this is that Mayorkas will have to cancel his trip to Colombia planned with Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The pair were planning to discuss migration issues with their regional counterparts.
It's unclear whether or not Mayorkas will appear as scheduled in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Oct. 21. The hearing in question pertained to oversight of the Department of Homeland Security.
