Doug Ford returned $10,000 from his own salary into government pockets, Global News's Queen's Park Bureau Chief Travis Dhanraj reported.

According to Dhanraj, the money was returned to the government months ago but the Ford government did not reveal the action until Monday.

Doug Ford's salary was listed at $208,974 in 2019 according to the so-called 'sunshine list,' a database of Ontario provincial employees who make $100,000 or more per year. The sunshine list was instituted by former Progressive Conservative Premier Mike Harris.

Both Doug Ford and his late brother, former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, have long been opponents of elected officials receiving high salaries and large perks. In 2012, Mayor Ford forwent a planned 3 percent pay increase for Toronto City Council members.

The former Mayor, who at the time was a City Councillor. also filmed a viral YouTube video where he outlined the numerous "perks" which those in his position received, which included free passes to the Toronto Zoo.

It is unclear what programs or government operations the returned money went towards.
