Edmonton Police were called out to a home on Monday evening, located at 25 Avenue NW and 43 Street NW after a stabbing was reported, according to Global News.
Upon their arrival they discovered a young girl under the age of 10 who was suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result of a stabbing. Emergency crews were called out to the scene but despite their best efforts, the girl died from her injuries on site.
People who live in the Mill Woods area have said the community is very close, and they created a small memorial on Tuesday morning. They told reporters that a widowed mother and her two young daughters were living at the address. Neighbours said they had lived at that address for about a decade.
"We were quite close," said Ravi Sharma, a neighbour. "For the past two or three years, we were having block parties… we felt quite close to each other."
This wasn't the family's first tragedy, as the daughters lost their father the summer before.
Police took a male suspect into custody on the night of the stabbing.
The two girls were well known in the neighbourhood, even taking part in the Stollery lemonade stand fundraisers. "Every year we used to have singing and dancing and parties together," said Sharma.
The case is currently under investigation by Edmonton Police Service as well as homicide detectives.
