Edmonton is now facing the highest active coronavirus case count that the city has seen since the pandemic began, with twice as many cases as Toronto, reports CTV News.

Edmonton is now under the Alberta Health watch category due to its high rate of active cases.

The population of Edmonton is currently 1,021,628 and the Alberta capital has 534 cases, which is equal to 52.3 active coronavirus cases per 100,000 people.

Toronto on the other hand has a population of 2,956,024 million and currently has just 264 cases—equal to 8.93 infections per 100,000 people.

Toronto has seen 15,622 cases in total and Edmonton has seen 2,099.

The local spike is worst in the city’s northeast with a rate of 126 infections per 100,000.

Don Iveson, the Mayor of Edmonton is "concerned and disappointed" with the rising number of cases.

This comes as Calgary continues to see the amount of its active cases drop. The city currently has 268 cases.

There were 359 new cases reported on Monday by Alberta Health for Friday through to Sunday, bringing the number of active infections to 1,132.

In total, Alberta has recorded 12,412 cases and 224 deaths.
