An additional 900 employees are being laid off in Edmonton due to coronavirus measures. This includes 450 transit operators, according to the Edmonton Journal.

Adam Laughlin, the interim city manager made the announcement on Monday during a city council meeting regarding property tax increase and the city’s 2020 operating budget.

There were 1,600 employees who work in closed recreation centres temporarily laid off on March 30.

Laughlin has talked about the layoffs for weeks when addressing the decrease in city services. The revenue reduction the city is looking at is $163.7 million if restrictions continue to be in effect until mid-September.

The city’s strategy to overcome the deficit using “workforce strategies” accounts for roughly $58 million.
