In preparation for a looming election, the Federal Liberals have acclaimed candidates in the ridings of Ottawa Centre, Kanata-Carleton and Pontiac. The announcement comes just hours after incumbents in these ridings indicated they would not seek re-election. This is according to the Toronto Sun.
In Kanata–Carleton, MP Karen McCrimmon announced she would not seek re-election due to health challenges. She also threw her support behind the acclaimed candidate, former Ottawa City Councillor Jenna Sudds. "What makes this difficult decision somewhat easier is that the remarkable Jenna Sudds … agreed to step in on very short notice and has been acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in Kanata-Carleton," McCrimmon said on Twitter Monday night.
In Ottawa Centre, incumbent minister Catherine McKenna announced she would not seek re-election. She plans on spending more time with her three children and pursuing climate action from outside government. Yasir Naqvi will be the Liberal to take McKenna's place as the candidate in Ottawa Centre. He is a former provincial Liberal who lost his seat in Ontario's 2018 election to New Democrat Joel Harden.
Finally, Pontiac Liberal incumbent William Amos also announced he would not seek re-election. Amos stirred controversy for appearing naked multiple times over virtual parliamentary hearings. Sophie Chatel will be the Liberal candidate for the riding of Pontiac.
To date, Liberals have confirmed 238 candidates and have 100 ridings left to fill.
