Elon Musk recently told Tucker Carlson during an interview that he has plans to create a chatbot that would rival Microsoft and Google, bashing the two tech juggernauts for the way they have used and abused AI.
He criticized Microsoft’s support for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, claiming that they are “training the AI to lie,” going on to say that the firm has become a “for-profit” organization “closely allied with Microsoft,” per the Daily Mail.
Musk did express some pessimism about his endeavor, suggesting that “it’s simply starting too late,” adding that “I will try to create a third option.” Because of Musk’s commitment to free speech, it is possible that he creates a bot that would be free from political bias unlike ChatGPT, which has been condemned for its overtly “woke” responses to prompts.
Twitter’s CEO has also accused Larry Page, co-founder of Google, for not taking AI safety seriously enough.
Musk said: “I'm going to start something which I call ‘TruthGPT,’ or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe.” He went on to suggest that TruthGPT may be the “best path to safety” that would be “unlikely to annihilate humans.”
Reuters noted that Musk has been poaching AI researchers from Google in order to launch his own startup to rival OpenAI. The news comes after Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a petition that would see a six-month pause on all AI development, fearing that the technology could be getting too far ahead.
Musk also reportedly told Carlson that AI is much more dangerous than “mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production,” adding that this kind of technology “has the potential of civilizational destruction.”
