Elon Musk, who recently purchased Twitter and is the Space X and Tesla CEO, called Biden's appointment of a leftist as the head of the new Disinformation Board, and the timing of the launch of the Board, "messed up," after the board was dubbed the "Ministry of Truth" by Twitter users.
On Wednesday, the Biden Administration's Department of Homeland Security announced the creation of the Disinformation Governance Board in what they say is an effort to counter the spread of misinformation related to homeland security.
Nina Jankowicz, the new head of the board, had previously called the Hunter Biden laptop story a "Trump campaign product," something that has been proven unequivocally false. While The New York Times had called the Hunter Biden laptop story "unsubstantiated" for months, they had to later admit in March of 2022 that the story carried water.
The Times wrote: "People familiar with the investigation said prosecutors had examined emails between Mr. Biden, Mr. Archer and others about Burisma and other foreign business activity. Those emails were obtained by The New York Times from a cache of files that appears to have come from a laptop abandoned by Mr. Biden in a Delaware repair shop. The email and others in the cache were authenticated by people familiar with them and with the investigation," the paragraph read.
The New York Post responded in an editorial op-ed piece. Their response slammed The New York Times, saying that the paper's decision more than a year after the The Post's bombshell reporting that "Hunter Biden’s business woes" were worthy of a story was unacceptable.
Jankowicz tweeted that she was "Honored to be serving in the Biden Administration’s Department of Homeland Security and helping shape our counter-disinformation efforts," sharing a Politico article about her new position, and saying that she would "coordinate countering misinformation related to homeland security."
Jankowicz has written two books: How To Lose The Information War: Russia, Fake News, and The Future Of Conflict and How to Be a Woman Online: Surviving Abuse and Harassment, and How to Fight Back.
News that the DHS was creating the board came just days after Twitter accepted Musk's offer to buy the platform for $44 billion.
The DHS declined an interview request by the Associated Press, but issued a statement after the news broke, saying "The spread of disinformation can affect border security, Americans’ safety during disasters, and public trust in our democratic institutions."
Critics of the DHS and the Biden Administration were quick to point out the Disinformation Board's similarities in-name to the Ministry of Truth from George Orwell's 1984.
The Ministry of Truth, in Orwell's 1984, serves as the propaganda and censorship department of Oceania.
The Ministry is known for having the three slogans on the outside of its building: "WAR IS PEACE," "FREEDOM IS SLAVERY," and "IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."
