Billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk had short, but choice words to say about the censorship of a retail stock trader server by Discord.
Tuesday afternoon Musk tweeted, "even Discord has gone corpo..." Musk is referring to social media platforms Reddit and Discord, which have banned servers for nefarious reasons.
On Reddit, the r/WallStreetBets server had initiated the mass buying of GameStop and several other targeted stocks, thwarting bigger investors who were short selling the stocks, causing staggering losses for hedge funds. The move rocked Wall Street and international markets as hedge funds have never been the target of collaborative forums. Reddit has since allowed the r/WallStreetBets server to be live again, but Discord has not triggering Musk's public rebuke of the platform, asserting they have become 'corporatist.'
Discord asserts the platform did not ban the page due to the ongoing stock drama, but rather because of "hateful and discriminatory content after repeated warnings," according to The Verge.
"To be clear, we did not ban this server due to financial fraud related to GameStop or other stocks. Discord welcomes a broad variety of personal finance discussions, from investment clubs and day traders to college students and professional financial advisors. We are monitoring this situation and in the event there are allegations of illegal activities, we will cooperate with authorities as appropriate," the statement from Discord said.
Elon Musk is not convinced and it remains to be seen whether the Discord server will go live again.
