Twitter owner Elon Musk refuted a story by the New York Post, which reported that Trump had quietly encouraged Musk to buy the platform.
The report by the Post sourced Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes during an appearance on Fox Business News.
"President Trump, basically before Elon Musk bought it, actually said to go and buy it because the goal of our company is really to build a community where people are in a family-friendly, safe environment," he told Fox.
This, however, somewhat contradicts Trump's position on the matter, as the former president has said that he would not be joining Twitter, instead opting for Truth social.
Musk responded in a tweet on Monday that Nunes' words are false.
"This is false. I’ve had no communication, directly or indirectly, with Trump, who has publicly stated that he will be exclusively on Truth Social," he said in a tweet.
Nunes is a former House GOP congressman.
