Gonzalo Lopez, a man who had been convicted of murder in Texas and managed to escape police custody, has now been shot dead by police after having allegedly murdered a family of five, four of whom were children.

On Thursday, authorities caught up to him in Jourdanton Texas, which is about 250 miles away from the grisly scene of the slaughtered family. He had been eluding justice since May 12.

According to the New York Post, "shortly before Lopez’s death, he had been named the prime suspect in the slaying of one adult and four children in Centerville," and "Lopez was ultimately spotted by law enforcement driving a white Chevrolet Silverado that he stole from the murder scene."

A high-speed chase ensued, with Lopez running over spike strips strategically placed by police. He wound up crashing the Silverado into a tree, upon which he immediately began firing at pursuing police officers who fired back, ending his life.

Police found both a handgun and a rifle at the scene afterward, both of which are believed to have originally belonged to the family which Lopez is alleged to have massacred previously in Centerville, whose identities at this time have not been made available to the public.

Aside from Lopez, nobody else was killed or injured in the exchange of gunfire.
