On Monday, February 25th voters in Burnaby South will be heading to the ballot.

For a byelection, Burnaby South has made national headlines since being called by the prime minister back in January.

As the clock is ticking closer to the vote on Monday, here are the latest on-the-ground updates from Burnaby South.

Liberals file complaint against NDP ads

The Liberal candidate Richard Lee has filed a complaint against the NDP with Canada's election watchdog.

The Liberals maintain that NDP ads on Facebook “lack the required authorization tag indicating that the messages are  being transmitted with the consent of the candidate’s official agent or the party’s registered agent."

The NDP maintain that their advertisements are in compliance with election law.

PPC point to poll indicating they're in the lead

An unofficial telephone poll conducted by high school students in the riding revealed that the PPC were in the lead ahead of the NDP by several percentage points.

The only official poll conducted early on in the riding by Mainstreet Research showed NDP leader Jagmeet Singh leading with 29.4 per cent of the vote, followed by Richard Lee (Lib.) at 17.7%, and Jay Shin (CPC) at 17.6% while the PPC trailed well behind at 4.7%.

No official polls have been conducted since January 15th.

CPC target Jagmeet Singh with flyers

A flyer was distributed to voters by Conservative Party candidate Jay Shin targeting the beleaguered NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh.

"Save the NDP! Defeat Jagmeet Singh so the NDP can get a new leader," read one side of the flyer.

Jagmeet Singh, the NDP party leader is currently campaigning in Burnaby  South to win a seat in the House of Commons. Party insiders have  indicated that if Mr. Singh fails to acquire a seat, he will be removed  as the NDP leader.

Maxime Bernier visits town

While only one of the candidates in the riding are a party leader in their own right, the byelection has attracted political star power because of its national significance.

Before the second debate, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the riding to campaign with the Liberal candidate Richard Lee.

Last week, PPC party leader Maxime Bernier also visited the campaign headquarters and spent some time on the road with PPC candidate Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson.
