As the nation mourns the loss of Captain Jennifer Casey and investigators search for answers in the Snowbird plane crash tragedy, some experts are calling for the discontinuation of the 60-year-old planes used by the Snowbirds.

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper had previously allocated $755 million to replace the CT-114 Tutor jets. This move was cancelled in 2018 by the Trudeau government who said that the planes should keep flying until 2030.

Lawyer and aviation specialist Arthur Rosenberg told CTV that the Snowbirds "do not belong flying these old planes anymore ... It's time to move on."

Former aircraft technician with the RCAF Dave McConney concurred. He told CTV that the Tutor jets "should have been retired a long time ago. I was in Air Command back in the ’80s and they were considered old and past retirement then."

A 2014 report called the fleet of Tutors "technically airworthy" though it pointed to "significant" concerns.

In 2019, the Trudeau government spent far less on the military than promised.
