Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to Twitter on Friday to celebrate Biden's decision to reverse a Trump-era cap on refugees.

"This is a testament to the power that people’s movements, community advocates, & progressive coalitions have built," Ocasio-Cortez wrote, Fox News reports.. "Thankful for that and the Biden admin's decision to respond to organizers today. Now let's get these families to their new homes here in the United States."

Biden signed an emergency determination on Friday which would accelerate the admission of refugees into the United States, but maintained the Trump administration's refugee cap of 15,000. Progressives considered the move to be a spit in the face, as Biden promised to increase the cap to 125,000 in February.

According to the administration, not raising the cap "remains justified by humanitarian concerns and is otherwise in the national interest."

However, the Biden administration reversed course later that day following outcry from congressional Democrats. The administration announced that they would be raising the refugee cap next month, although they did not specify to what level.

Other progressives such as Ilhan Omar (D-MN) also celebrated the decision.
