Wray highlighted the fact that the lab in Wuhan, China from which the virus likely originated was overseen by the Chinese Communist Party.
"The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan," Wray said.
He went on to explain that the FBI "has folks, agents, professionals, analysts, virologists, microbiologists, etc, who focus, specifically, on the dangers of biological threats, which includes things like novel viruses like COVID, and the concerns that in the wrong hands some bad guys, some hostile nation-state, a terrorist, a criminal, the threats that could pose."
"So here you're talking about a leak at a Chinese government-controlled lab that killed millions of Americans," Wray continued, suggesting that "that’s precisely what that capability was designed for."He criticized the CCP of "doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate ... the work that our US government and close foreign partners are doing," saying, "that's unfortunate for everybody."
As the Daily Mail reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning did just that on Monday, calling on "certain parties" to "stop rehashing the 'lab leak' narrative, stop smearing China, and stop politicizing origins-tracing."
China has tried everything to prevent outside authorities from investigating the origins of Covid-19. In February, the World Health Organization abandoned its probe after China denied access to investigators.
The team of researchers outlined four potential outbreak scenarios in their initial report, one of which was the lab leak hypothesis. After noting that it had to be investigated as part of Phase 2, China refused to let them back in.
The lab leak hypothesis has nonetheless come to be accepted by more and more authorities, including most recently the US Energy Department.
