The first busload of illegal migrants sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has made it to New York City, after Mayor Eric Adams declined an invite from the governor to tour the southern border, stating that the city "will never turn our backs on those in need who are arriving here."
Roughly 50 migrants, who were mostly men, were greeted by charity workers at Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, NY, after making the nearly 2,000-mile trip from the southern border of Texas, according to Fox News. Because New York is a sanctuary city, these illegal immigrants can venture out into the city and receive government assistance.
The bus was sent by Gov. Abbott, a Republican, who commanded the Texas Division of Emergency Management to transport border-crossers to liberal cities across the country to garner attention for the security and humanitarian crisis going on at the southern border, and the influx of illegal aliens making their way into the country.
"Because of President Biden’s continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe," said Abbott in a press release.
In a letter sent on Monday addressed to Adams and Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Abbott said Texas had spent over $3 billion in the last 18 months "to curtail the devastation felt by our communities large and small."
Despite Adams, a Democrat, repeatedly begging for help from the federal government to lessen the impact on the influx of migrants into the city, he has also been critical of the "callousness" of southern border states' for busing migrants elsewhere, reported Fox News.
"Our system was inundated with those who were seeking shelter because of the callousness of the states that pushed them out. We're here. We're receiving them, and everyone is going to have to be on board," Adams said. "We can’t have the historical 'I believe they should be housed, but just don’t house them on my block.' Everyone’s block is going to be impacted by this… our schools are going to be impacted, our healthcare system is going to be impacted, our infrastructure is going to be impacted."
"Your recent interest in this historic and preventable crisis is a welcome development – especially as the President and his Administration have shown no remorse for their actions nor desire to address the situation themselves," Abbott wrote in the letter to Adams and Bowser, who have been critical of his efforts.
"As Governor, I invite you to visit our border region to see firsthand the dire situation that only grows more urgent with each passing day, and to meet with the local officials, who like yourselves, realize this matter deserves immediate federal action. I also ask you to join me in requesting President Biden secure the border and put an end to this disastrous crisis."
"Instead of a photo-op at the border, we hope Governor Abbott will focus his energy and resources on providing support and resources to asylum seekers in Texas as we have been hard at work doing in New York City," Adams' spokesman said, reported the New York Post. "We continue to work with federal partners to receive additional financial resources immediately, but will never turn our backs on those in need who are arriving here."
Prior to New York, Texas has also been sending busloads of illegal immigrants to the nation's capital to get the attention from the federal government.
"In addition to Washington, DC, New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city," Abbott said. "I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief."
The latest busload of migrants to DC arrived from Texas late Tuesday night. CNN reported that the state of Texas has sent at least 5,100 migrants to the nation's capital.
