Almost half of President Joe Biden’s 22.2 million Twitter followers were revealed to be not authentic. An audit was conducted by SparkToro, which discovered that 49.3 percent of the leader’s followers are “fake followers,” per the New York Post last year.
The news came as Elon Musk was attempting to purchase the social media giant. However, he expressed speculation over the amount of fake accounts that were on the site. Musk believed that about 20 percent of all Twitter accounts were fake ones.
SparkToro defined “fake followers” as “accounts that are unreachable and will not see the account’s tweets (either because they’re spam, bots, propaganda, etc. or because they’re not longer active on Twitter).”
Biden has leaned hard into social media influence during his presidency, bringing influencers to the White House and posting key administration directives, such as telling parents to "affirm your kids," on Twitter. His team has had feminine men such as Dylan Mulvaney and others over to the White House to advocate for their positions, as well as holding roundtables to deliver mesaging to influencers on Covid and the war in Ukraine.
Musk mentioned that his large offer for the social media company was “based on Twitter’s SEC filings being accurate,” adding that “Twitter’s CEO publicly refused to show proof of <5%."
SparkToro also conducted the same audit on Musk’s 93.3 million Twitter followers, and they discovered that approximately 70 percent of his followers fall under their definition of “fake accounts,” per Newsweek.
