Ontario New Democrat candidate Lise Vaugeois said that Canada's national anthem, "O Canada", is a tool of social engineering that is "not completely divorced from the idea" from "brainwashing."

Vaugeois made the comments during an interview in a 2019 podcast.

She is currently running to represent Thunder Bay Superior North, having lost in the last election by just 813 votes to Liberal Michael Gravelle, reports the Toronto Sun.

Gravelle, however, will be stepping down from his riding, which he has held since 1995, due to health concerns.

Gravelle has been dealing with depression and recently was rediagnosed with cancer.

Vaugeois, a former academic at Lakehead University, is looking to take over Gravelle's position and be the first person besides him to represent the riding in 27 years.
