Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised truckers during the pandemic for bringing supplies to grocers shelves and keeping Canadians well-stocked during government imposed COVID lockdowns. Now, he slams them for protesting his endless restrictions, including vaccine mandates.
"While many of us are working from home," Trudeau wrote in 2020, "there are others who aren’t able to do that - like the truck drivers who are working day and night to make sure our shelves are stocked. So when you can, please #ThankATrucker for everything they’re doing and help them however you can."
After a weekend that saw truckers protesting in Ottawa and gridlocking streets, Trudeau slammed them on Twitter, saying that "I know this pandemic is frustrating. It’s frustrating that, after two years, we’re not done fighting COVID-19. But over the past few days, Canadians have been shocked – and, frankly, disgusted – by the behaviour displayed by some people protesting in our nation’s capital."
This after the Prime Minister tested positive for COVID.
He went on to deride the truckers further, linking their wish for freedom, to not be required to vaccinate while along in their trucks, saying:
"I want to be very clear: We're not intimidated by those who hurl abuse at small business workers and steal food from the homeless. We won’t give in to those who fly racist flags. And we won’t cave to those who engage in vandalism, or dishonour the memory of our veterans," he wrote.
"There is no place in Canada for this behaviour," he continued. "So, to those responsible: It needs to stop. And to those who joined the convoy but are uncomfortable with the symbols of hatred and division on display: Be courageous and speak out. Do not stand for, or with, intolerance and hate."
Canadian media, as well as Liberal and NPD leaders, have tried to smear the truckers and their supporters as racist, but many Canadians, such as Pierre Poilievre, are not having it and have slapped back against the accusations. Dr. Jordan Peterson said Conservative leaders should "seize the day."
Indigenous protestors were out in force during the weekend protest, and there was very little evidence to suggest that the Freedom Convoy, as it has been termed, had any leanings toward racism or hate.
When protestors saw an individual with a confederate flag, he was confronted and told to leave. Legacy media published multiple headlines suggesting the man with a Confederate flag is representative of the entire group.
"Now he's going. We called him out. He knows. He's gonna hold his head in shame now," said one protester after the conversation.
Trudeau left Ottawa on Saturday for an undisclosed location as there were "security concerns" due to the protest. Some said they intended to stay in Ottawa with their trucks, protesting, gridlocking the city, until either Trudeau resigns or lifts the mandates.
