A 47-year-old Florida woman was charged with a series of hate crimes on June 18 after she pepper sprayed four Asian women on June 10 in New York City.
According to Fox News, court records show Madeline Barker was charged with attempted assault as a hate crime, assault as a hate crime, and harassment as a hate crime.
In a video that went viral Barker can be seen liberally pepper spraying her victims. Barker reportedly screamed "Go back to where you came from, you don't belong here" during the attack that happened in Manhattan's meatpacking district.
Manhattan prosecutors argued that Barker was a flight risk because she is a Florida native and because she didn't turn herself in.
Barker, who was called a "Karen" on social media, was subsequently recognized on the street and then arrested.
The Daily Mail reports Judge Eric Schumacher agreed with the prosecution and set bail at $20,000 cash with a $20,000 partially secure bond to keep Barker from fleeing to her home in the Sunshine State.
The victims, all from Queens, told local news they wished to remain anonymous after the racially motivated attack, but one did say "It was so painful, I couldn't open my eyes for about 30 minutes."
The Post Millennial’s Editor-at-Large Andy Ngo has spoken about the trend of Anti-Asian crime, both in its uptick and its mischaracterization in the media, who often ignore it outright if it the incident doesn't fit a larger narrative.
As crime has gone up in major cities, so too has there been an increase in Anti-Asian crime. Earlier this year several Philadelphia teens attacked an asian girl because of her race and a New York City man was beaten to death in an unprovoked attack.
