Former Finance Minister Bill Moneau violated Canada's Elections Act by promoting prospective Liberal candidates in the 2019 election, the commissioner of Canada elections said.

Morneau—whose personal wealth is counted in millions—will have to pay a measly $300 fine, and will have to post a copy of the findings on his social media.

"During the pre-election period for the 43rd general election, Mr. Morneau participated in a series of department-supported events in his capacity as federal Minister of Finance. In addition to community and business leaders, there were prospective Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) candidates in attendance at the events, which were held in the electoral districts of Oakville and Dufferin—Caledon. Mr. Morneau promoted these prospective candidates, which caused the expenses related to those events to benefit the LPC," a news release from the commissioner reads.

The disgraced Finance Minister also broke the act when he posed for photos with Dufferin-Caledon Liberal candidate Michele Fisher.

According to the Open and Accountable Government guide, Ministers are "prohibited from using public resources and funds from their departmental budgets for partisan purposes."

The former Toronto Centre MP stepped down from his position last month during the fallout of the WE Charity scandal.
