Kim Potter, the Brooklyn Center police officer who fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright, is expected to be charged on Wednesday.
According to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, sources say the Washington County Attorney's Office is planning on leveling charges against Potter. They report that the Hennepin County Attorney's Office works closely with Brooklyn Center Police, so the case has been moved to "avoid a conflict of interest".
Potter, who had been on the force for 26 years, resigned earlier today. The Brooklyn Center police chief Tim Gannon also stepped down.
On Sunday, Potter approached Daunte Wright after pulling him over for a traffic violation. As USA Today reports, she reached for what she apparently thought was her taser, but instead pulled out her gun and shot Wright in the chest. He died not long after.
In the released body-cam footage, an officer is heard saying "Taser, Taser, Taser", which, according to BBC News, is "standard police procedure before firing one of the stun guns". As Wright lay dying in his vehicle, Potter can be heard saying "Holy s**t, I just shot him". Chief Gannon stated that he believed "the officer meant to deploy their taser, but shot him with a single bullet". Regardless, Wright's death has been ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.
The killing of Daunte Wright is just the latest in a list of highly publicized incidents of officer-involved shootings. Protests, riots, and looting have erupted across the country, with many calling for the police to be defunded and rebuilt, or abolished altogether.
