Fort McMurray has been experiencing critical overland flooding Sunday night and by Monday morning the continuous flooding has resulted in mandatory evacuation orders.
Some areas of Fort MacMurray's downtown have been closed off and access to the city's Lower Townsite has been completely cut off, according to CTV News.
Initially, it was the high water levels of the Athabasca and Clearwater Rivers that sounded the alarm Sunday night. Mandatory evacuation orders were set in place by the Rural Municipality of Wood Buffalo on Monday as things got worse.
There were over 100 people who refused to comply with the evacuation orders in the municipality, they later had to be rescued during the night.
For neighbourhoods that fall north of the Athabasca River bridges, a boil water advisory has also been implemented.
The municipality was already under a state of local emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and since the flooding, they have had to issue a secondary state of emergency.
Places like the Wood Buffalo Food Bank have been forced to close due to the flooding and their services were already desperately needed at this time to help with the pandemic.
Residents who have been ousted from their homes may find refuge at one Edmonton hotel that is currently offering a "Compassion Rate."
