The perception of USA progressive ideology was cemented by France’s President Macron earlier this year. Macron lamented on how it spread out across the globe from the USA, and eventually made even the French general public more "racializing" of one another. This and more came out of the interview Macron gave to Elle magazine.
Now that sentiment is resurfacing, as Newsweek shares the cover of Le Spectacle Du Monde. Translated it says "The Suicide of America," and it openly questions if America’s collapse was imminent based on the Biden administration’s recent gaffes in Afghanistan, the U.S. southern border, and elsewhere.
The majority of the Newsweek write-up talks about the annual "Tocqueville Conversations" event held at Chateau de Tocqueville in France. Alexis de Tocqueville's present-day descendant Jean-Guillaume hosts this meeting of the minds to debate American politics.
"Our mantra is that we should talk even if we strongly disagree. Nothing prevents you from talking and exchanging and dialoguing," said Jean-Guillaume de Tocqueville, who told Zenger News how strong of a free speech advocate he was.
"The French Revolution was an event that led to a bloody civil war because the people who were not in agreement with the new ideas, the really revolutionary ideas, were just killed and beheaded [...] it was not a good way to debate."
Panels throughout the days of the event hosted a wide variety of discussions. Members of France's high society attended the event, including former Prime Minister Alain Juppé.
The big tech dynamic couldn’t be ignored by speakers. Pavel Fischer of the Czech Senate’s Foreign Affairs noted how troubling it was that Apple is willing to so easily capitulate to China’s censorship demands.
According to Newsweek, panels at the event raised concerns about social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook trending towards left-wing authoritarianism with their censorship guidelines.
"The two most toxic ideologies of the 20th century were Nazism and Marxism. In my opinion, Nazism was identity politics on steroids, and Marxism was an oppressor narrative on steroids. The combination of the two is actually modern wokeism that was born in the United States," said author of Woke Inc., Vivek Ramaswamy.
Also in attendance was former Trump adviser Jason Miller, who is now the CEO of the alternative social media platform GETTR.
Miller grilled AFP CEO Fabrice Fries — confronting him about the validity of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop, as well as questioning his open celebration of Donald Trump getting booted off of social media.
The general consensus that was reached in these open discussions was that free speech in American society is being eroded by progressive ideology.
"If speech opposes that preferred narrative, we are told it is itself an act of violence. So speech is violence. And responding to such speech with actual violence is an act of self-defense. I think that this is at the core of what is happening to us," remarked former Judge Janice Rogers Brown, who served on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
