Canada's top military commander, Gen. Jonathan Vance, announced his retirement on Thursday, publishing a statement on Twitter informing the troops of his departure.
"I wish to inform you that I have conferred with our Minister of National Defence, our Prime Minister and, Her Excellency the Governor General and have conveyed to them my intent, and with their permission, to relinquish command of the Canadian Armed Forces in the months to come," wrote Vance.
The selection of the new Chief of Defence Staff and subsequent change of command date will be determined by the federal government.
“You, the members of the #CAF, have been the inspiration for my life and I have given you my all. Until I relinquish command I will continue to serve you and Canadians with the same energy and effort I always have. Pro Patria” JV pic.twitter.com/Uf1lh9TENu

Vance served in the role for over five years, having been appointed during the Harper administration.
“Until I relinquish command, I will continue to serve you and Canadians with the same energy and effort I always have,” continued Vance.
“In the meantime remember, you mean everything to Canada, you are more important to the success of this nation that most will ever know, and I am so very proud to be counted among your ranks.”
One of the longest-serving military commanders in Canada’s history, General Jonathan Vance has served our country with distinction for nearly 40 years. In the coming months, he will retire as Chief of the Defence Staff and from the @CanadianForces.

Vance's tenure didn't go without its controversies, namely the handling of now-retired Vice Adm. Mark Norman.
