GLSEN, a gender identity and LGBTQ+ advocacy group, is searching for children to join their National Student Council. GLSEN’s website allows children in eighth grade and up to apply to be an advocate for "marginalized groups within the LGBTQ community," including: "youth who are HIV positive…transgender, non binary, intersex, and gender nonconforming youth."
The application form to be a student advocate asks children to list their pronouns, sexuality, and association to the LGBTQ+ community.
While GLSEN limits their child advocates to eighth grade and up, their student advocacy program encourages students to educate children in kindergarten and above on LGBTQ+ politics and advocacy. Their student advocate page states, "We welcome any and all individuals as members, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and/or occupation, who are committed to seeing this philosophy realized in K-12 schools."
GLSEN has been engaging in nationwide efforts for years, including partnering with Disney to fund LGBTQ+ curriculum in classrooms. Disney announced their continued partnership with GLSEN last month in collaboration for Disney’s children’s Pride collection, which featured rainbow sippy cups, backpacks, and toddler t-shirts.
Earlier this month, GLSEN hosted a "Youth Pride Conference" at a Florida church, which featured a drag show for kids as young as twelve.
The reach of GLSEN is sizable to say the least, boasting a "a network of 43 chapters in 30 states across the nation, to ensure that we have access to schools and districts across the country to reach every student."
GLSEN claims their national network is "more than 1.5 million strong, with students, families, educators, and education advocates." They aren’t short on classroom material either, claiming to have half a million "students and educators" downloading GLSEN resources per year.
Parents on the lookout for their children signing up for these LGBTQ+ advocacy groups can keep a close eye on their children’s email, as it’s required to apply for GLSEN's program.
