The internet website hosting company GoDaddy is facing backlash after sending out a hoax email to employees offering bonuses, KPNX reports.

"Happy Holiday GoDaddy! 2020 has been a record year for GoDaddy, thanks to you," the email reads. "Though we cannot celebrate together during our annual Holiday Party, we want to show our appreciation and share a $650 one-time Holiday bonus!"

Having already told employees that they will not be receiving Christmas bonuses this year amid mass, nation-wide layoffs, GoDaddy claimed that the email was sent out to see if their employees would fall for a phishing scam.

"To ensure that you receive your one-time bonus in time for the Holidays, please select your location and fill in the details by Friday, December 18th," the email further reads.

Employees, however, were not amused by the hoax, complaining in an anonymous town hall meeting the next day about the email.
