A GoFundMe for the parents of deceased 5-year-old and gunshot victim Cannon Hinnant has raised over $750,000.
Last Sunday, 25-year-old Darius Sessoms, who lives next door to Cannon’s father, allegedly shot the boy in the head at point-blank range while he was riding his bike and his two young sisters, aged seven and eight, witnessed their brother's murder.
Hinnant's grandmother set up the account just five days ago.
"He was merely doing what he would do any other day and that’s playing with his sisters, riding his bike, doing what kids do and all of the innocence that comes with being a child," Gwen Hinnant wrote. "This family has faced unimaginable pain because of this senseless act of violence."
The funds could be allocated towards a memorial park where the boy's family would ride their bikes.
Cannon’s mother, Bonny Waddell, expressed her grief on Facebook.
“This man will answer to me,” she wrote in a post Tuesday. “That man will see me and my son through my face! This sorry excuse as a human being will rot in hell.”
She then added: “My heart has been taken from me.”
In another post, Waddell stated that Cannon’s two sisters “just lost a puzzle piece, their best friend, a piece of their heart," asking for prayers for her daughters.
Recently, she posted: "It’s time for me stand up and be Cannons voice like I always have been... he is depending on his mommy and he knows mommy has got this."
"THIS HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE AND DO NOT COMPARE THIS TO FLOYD! MY SWEET CANNON NEVER SAW COLOR, HE LOVED EVERYBODY. HE WAS INNOCENT, LOVING, SEFLESS, BEST BROTHER EVER AND THIS CRUEL MAN TOOK HIM AWAY FROM US FOR NO REASON," she passionately typed.
Waddell told WRAL that she will be seeking the death penalty over his murder.
“We lost a big piece of our family. We all. He changed all of our lives. He touched everybody he knew,” she said. “This man took my girls when he took my baby. They know he’s in a better place.”
“I want death penalty and I’m gonna seek it,” Waddell urged.
Sessoms was charged with first-degree murder and is being detained without bond. His next court date is set for Aug. 25.
