In a new poll published on Thursday, it revealed that a vast majority of Republican and independent voters say the FBI raid at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence was not a "reasonable step to pursue justice," and that the raid of the private residence draws America further from being a freedom-based democratic republic.
The poll, conducted by The Trafalgar Group in partnership with the Convention of States Action, interviewed 1095 likely general election voters between August 9 and 10, with a margin of error of 2.9 percent.
In response to the question, "Do you believe the FBI raid on President Trump's home was a reasonable step to pursue justice?" A slight majority overall said that it was not a reasonable step, at 50.7 percent. 49.3 percent said that it was in fact a reasonable step.
Split by political party though, Democrats vastly supported the action, with 91.5 percent saying it was a reasonable step.
Republican and independent voters went the other way though, with 84 and 58.6 percent of likely voters, respectively, saying the step was not reasonable.
This group of likely voters was also asked whether the FBI raid of Trump’s private residence "brings America closer or further away from being a freedom based democratic republic," to which a slight majority overall said that the event brings the country farther, at 51.3 percent. 48.7 percent said yes, the raid brings the country closer to being a freedom-based democratic republic.
Once again when looking at answers split by political party affiliation, democrats were strongly on the side of yes, while Republicans and independents answered no.
88 percent of Democrats said that the raid brings the country closer to being a freedom-based democratic republic, while 81.8 percent of Republicans and 58.6 percent of independents said it brings the country further away.
On Monday morning, Trump’s Palm Beach residence was raided by FBI agents who were looking for documents he may have held onto from his days in the Oval Office that are covered under the Presidential Records Act.
Trump has blasted the effort, suggesting that during the raid, where Trump lawyers were kept outside of the building, FBI agents could have planted evidence in the building.
"The FBI and others from the Federal Government would not let anyone, including my lawyers, be anywhere near the areas that were rummaged and otherwise looked at during the raid on Mar-a-Lago," Trump posted to his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday.
"Everyone was asked to leave the premises, they wanted to be left alone, without any witnesses to see what they were doing, taking or, hopefully not, 'planting,'" he added.
In another poll conducted by the Trafalgar Group, it found that a majority of Americans are more likely to vote in the upcoming midterm election following the raid, regardless of political party affiliation.
