Yesterday, US President Donald Trump announced that starting August 16th the US will be imposing a 10-cent tariff on imports of Canadian aluminum products.

Jay Timmons, President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, the largest manufacturing association in the United States, called the tariffs a "step backwards for a historic trade agreement [USMCA] that restored trade certainty and empowered our industry."

In an announcement today, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland detailed primary plans to institute 3.6 billion dollars worth of countermeasures on an “extensive list” of US aluminum products, including aluminum beverage cans, tinfoil, kitchenware, construction materials, appliances and recreational items.

The Government of Canada will consult Canadian industry over the next 30 days on this list of American made products in hopes of levelling the playing field and initiating dollar-for-dollar retaliation.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland called the tariffs “unnecessary, unwarranted and entirely unacceptable." She then mentioned the negative effects that the announcement will bring to both sides of the border. Freeland brought up that Trump used the Whirlpool washing machine plant as a backdrop to make an announcement that will effect Americans who buy those very products.
