Workers at public hospitals in Greece are protesting against the government plan to mandate vaccinations for all public and private healthcare workers. According to CP24, the 300 workers held a five-hour work stoppage Thursday in Athens, Greece.
The mandatory vaccine plan goes into effect September 1 and the government notes that those who have not been vaccinated by that date will be suspended. The public hospital workers' union says it fully supports vaccines but opposes making them mandatory.
“We will not leave defenseless the health care and social care workers who have a personal right to vaccination,” the union said.
“Patients are not at risk of catching the coronavirus from health care workers. Hospitals are filling up again with patients suffering from the coronavirus which they caught in the community,” they added.
Greece is currently facing a steep increase in COVID-19 cases as hospitals are now at 69 percent capacity. Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said Tuesday that “significantly more than 90% of patients who are in COVID ICUs are unvaccinated."
More than 11 million doses have been administered in Greece, with 5.6 million people fully vaccinated against the virus.
