New Democrat MP Niki Ashton and Green MP Paul Manly will be speaking at the "Zoom to free Meng Wanzhou" event on November 24, an event that claims that the Huawei CFO was "unjustly incarcerated by the Trudeau government at the request of the Trump Administration."
The arrest of Meng, who was arrested nearly two years ago on accusations of conspiracy to defraud international institutions and circumventing US sanctions on Iran, lead to China's arbitrary arrest of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who remain detained to this day.
“You’ll learn more from Canadian experts about her legal case, deteriorating relations with China, and the rise of sinophobia in Canada—plus what you can do about it,” a poster for the event reads.
The case for releasing Meng Wanzhou was shot down and dismissed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. When several high-profile Canadians wrote a letter urging the prime minister to "free Meng and end the extradition trial that could send her to the US," Trudeau responded that it would make Canadians around the world "vulnerable."
“If countries around the world, including China, realize that by arbitrarily arresting random Canadians they can get what they want out of Canada politically... that makes an awful lot more Canadians who travel around the world vulnerable to that kind of pressure,” said Trudeau
Green Party MP Paul Manly will also speak at the event, which aligns with the Greens' stance on the matter. Ashton's stance, however, does not align with her party's.
In 2018, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh that the party would stick to the "rule of law," dismissing calls within the NDP to have her freed.
