Glen Murray, Green Party of Canada leadership candidate, former MPP for Toronto Centre, and first openly gay mayor of a large North American city (Winnipeg), took a shot at Leslyn Lewis last night on Twitter.
The now deleted tweet was a critique of Lewis' article that came out in the National Post that detailed her stance on free dialogue within politics. She wrote about the importance of "having those difficult and honest conversations" on issues like abortion, euthanasia, and racism.
Murray said Lewis wants a country which uses electrocution therapy on gay children, where gay people wouldn't be able to raise their children and gay couples wouldn't be able to marry.
Lewis' team responded a few hours later on Twitter with a simple statement, "This is completely false."
Lewis in fact did oppose the Canadian government's proposed ban on conversion therapy – she cited the importance of parental autonomy and the fear that speaking sessions with pastors or parents may be banned.
She has also stated that she personally believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, but she has said she would not roll back existing legislation that allows for equal marriage in our country.
