It seem that Americans are developing a new sense of appreciation for the second amendment. While political violence on the streets of Portland (and most other major cities across the country) intensifies, gun shops are experiencing an explosion in sales. Nearly five million Americans became first time gun owners in 2020, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation surveyed that around 40 percent of all sales were to individuals who had never owned a firearm previously. They’ve reported this development as a “tectonic shift” for the industry.

It’s no secret that we have all felt profoundly unsafe this year, starting all the way at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when people began to panic as food shelves emptied. Things have only ramped up since then, with most major cities experiencing unprecedented levels of violence, rioting, and looting. Business owners and everyday citizens are coming to the realization that the institutions they’ve always expected would protect them, simply aren’t. Violent rioters and looters are being arrested, only to be bailed out by activist groups and politicians.

Many states are also releasing violent criminals in the name of safety during coronavirus. California has released tens of thousands of inmates from prisons across the state, some of which have been convicted of violent and/or sexual crimes. With these individuals back on the streets and half the country chanting to “defund the police,” the country is coming to realization that self defense may be their only option.

Many influencers in the political sphere are encouraging their followers to stock up on ammunition and firearms, as shortages are here.

This new gratitude for firearms among the general public will likely affect Joe Biden’s polling, as he has promised to put Beto O’Rourke in charge of gun control, should he win in November. O’Rourke has come out strongly in the past making statements like, “Hell yes, we're going to take away your AR-15, your AK-47.”

Regardless of what happens between now and November, it is guaranteed that the second amendment will be an extremely important issue that many Americans will keep in mind when casting their vote.
