Gunshots send crowds fleeing from Kentucky State Fair, multiple arrests made

Noises believed to be gunfire disrupted the Kentucky State Fair Saturday night, causing people to run from the area in panic, and resulting in multiple arrests.

Kentucky State Police said in a statement that multiple people were taken into custody, with charges pending. According to the statement, posted to Twitter late Saturday night, the Kentucky State Fair Board announced a "soft close" to ensure the safety of attendees. Thankfully, no one was injured.

Sounds of what were believed to be gunshots were heard shortly after 9 pm near the big slide ride, prompting waves of people to flee, reported the Courier Journal.

After the surrounding area calmed down, state troopers tackled what appeared to be a juvenile fleeing from them outside a large tent, making the first of several arrests that were carried out that night.

Nine unidentified people, including three adults and six minors, were arrested by state troopers and the Kentucky State Fair Police, and will reportedly face several charges, including disorderly conduct, menacing and possession of a handgun.

"The initial investigation indicates that a group of individuals caused panic with noise-making devices, leading fair goers to believe shots had been fired," said the Kentucky State Fair Board.

"At this time, KSP investigators have found no physical evidence that a weapon was discharged during the disruption, but the investigation remains ongoing."

In a Sunday statement, officials from the Kentucky State Fair Board announced that operations will continue as normal.
