On Thursday, Limose Dort, a mother of four who recently arrived in New York from her native Haiti, died after being shot repeatedly in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. She came to the US to provide a better life for her family.
An unnamed 30-year-old-man was also shot in the arm during the same attack. Both victims were rushed to Kings County Hospital. The male victim is expected to survive his injuries.
Police are investigating whether the male victim was possibly the target of the attack. However, reports indicate that he's not cooperating with local law enforcement.
Police said that Dort was walking through the streets of the perennially troubled Crown Heights area. She passed the Image barber Shop on St. John's place when stray bullets struck her multiple times in the chest and abdomen.
Janse Joseph Dort, the only child of Limose to come to New York with her, told ABC 7, "This is her usual route around the same time every day. She just happened to be in the wrong place."
He continued, addressing the gunman who took his mother away from him: "Think about your mom, think about your family, how much they mean to you. It's the same thing for everybody. You killed my mom. There's no way I'm going to get her back."
This is the second incident in New York City this month where assailants brazenly and indiscriminately sprayed the outside of a barbershop with bullets.
