According to the best possible numbers we can find (China’s are untrustworthy to say the least), America now leads the world in cases of coronavirus. For some reason, former presidential candidate and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton thought it would be wise to use this opportunity to dunk on President Trump.
She tweeted: “He did promise ‘America First.’” No, we’re not joking. The woman who was almost leader of the free world thought it helpful and even clever to mock President Trump by using one of his slogans to highlight the number of sick and dying Americans there currently are as a result of the pandemic.
Remember that Clinton was also a New York State Senator—a disproportionate number of COVID-19 sufferers are in New York City. Does she want to praise New York City for being number one in the nation, too? Or is she not trying to level blows at Mayor Bill de Blasio?
Gallows humour is one thing, but bashing President Trump, who, yes, in his usual aggrandizing way has put America rhetorically first (after all, that’s kind of his job), is not cruel to him, but to the rest of Americans.
As usual, the left is using any and every opportunity to take aim at Trump. They don’t like him, they don’t have to, but what they’re really doing isn’t shooting down the President, but the people who voted for him, who in making their choice of president went with the guy who said America wasn’t bad, and deserved fair treatment on the world stage.
So many of America's leaders, from mayors up to the President, did not recognize an immediate necessity to lock down the American people in order to combat the coronavirus contagion. Perhaps it is a failure of imagination, or perhaps it had something to do with the principles of upholding liberty in a free nation. There is a predilection in media to blame Trump for the growth of cases in America, but the fact of the matter is that no western nation was adequately able to grasp the severity of the situation before it hit.
Hillary Clinton, of all people, should know how essential is the balance between freedom and government control. She has served her nation for decades, and is well aware of how important it is to balance federal power with individual liberty.
Thankfully, many sane people decided to point out just how disgusting Clinton’s tweet was.
