It was revealed that in December the president's son had, unbeknownst to the White House, hired lawyer Abbe Lowell, who he hoped would be more aggressive than his previous attorney. Hunter's team also recently announced that they are looking into launching a legal defense fund, an idea that has been met with concern from many Democrats.
According to Axios, Lowell met privately with White House officials, including Biden attorney Bob Bauer, after being hired by Hunter. Bauer had previously recommended that Hunter was best off keeping his old lawyer, John Levy, for the congressional investigations, but the president's son refused to listen.
Bauer and the other aides called on Lowell to ensure that Hunter's team communicated with the White House regarding their strategy so they would all be on the same page.
Since being brought on to represent Hunter, Lowell has taken a more public approach to dealing with the allegations leveled against his client. The White House, which had previously refrained from speaking about the issue, has followed suit, defending the president and his family.
When it comes to the aforementioned legal defense fund, however, the two sides are far from agreement.
"For this fund to work," former Department of Justice spokesperson Anthony Coley said, "it must be extraordinarily transparent and even restrictive by prohibiting foreign citizens and registered lobbyists from contributing."
He warned that, "without these type of guardrails, the fund will be a legitimate headache for the White House."
Hunter is currently under investigation by the DOJ, and has been embroiled in a child support case brought on by a woman in Arkansas with whom he has a daughter.
