The husband of one of the two teachers whose lives were taken prematurely after a shooting spree in Uvalde, Texas has passed away following a heart attack.
Joe Garcia was married to Irma Garcia for 24 years and had four children together, according to KABB San Antonio reporter Ernie Zuniga.
A fundraiser for the family, initially intended just for Irma, has raised over $200,000 for the family.
"Irma Garcia. A wife and mother to 4 children. Sweet, kind, loving. Fun with the greatest personality. A wonderful 4th grade teacher at Robb Elementary that was a victim in a Texas school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. She sacrificed herself protecting the kids in her classroom. She was a hero.
"She was loved by many and will truly be missed. We love you so much Irma. The Martinez Family. I John Martinez am the nephew to Irma. The money will be used for any expenses needed for the funeral and for the family needs and will be given to the family via a check," the GoFundMe reads.
Garcia, 48, was one of two teachers killed during the Robb Elementary School shooting, along with Eva Mireles, 44, and 19 students, shot by 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos.
"I want her to be remembered as someone who sacrificed her life and put her life on the line for her kids," said her nephew John Martinez. "They weren’t just her students. Those were her kids, and she put her life on the line, she lost her life to protect them. That’s the type of person she was."
