On Saturday, former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines responded to comments California Congresswoman Katie Porter made Friday on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher when she said that Gaines was speaking out against biological males in women's sports for "likes and clicks."
Via Twitter, Gaines said, "Hey, @RepKatiePorter I'm not speaking up for myself… I'm done playing sports. I'm not fighting for me. I'm actually supposed to be in dental school this year. But I've changed my life plans because I see what's at stake if someone doesn't fight for the present and next generation."
The comments came as fellow guest Piers Morgan pushed back on the Congresswoman, and asked where she disagrees with Gaines. Morgan said, "all I have seen her do is stand up for women's rights in fairness and equality" and "she actually competed against Lia Thomas and it was obviously unfair."
During the segment Porter said she "thinks it should be up to sporting bodies to make the decisions," but that she "respects free speech."
Host Bill Maher questioned, "wasn't that the point of Title IX?" He added, "that was a major event in feminism, we had this law that said in colleges, and I think high school… that women's sports have to be equal to men's sports."
Morgan later said that trans people who want to compete need to do so "against their biological sex like they did before, or create an entirely new category."
Gaines has been traveling the country speaking out against trans women in women's sports. Recently at an event with TPUSA at San Francisco State University she was violently assaulted and then trapped in a closet while activists hurled insults. They also demanded ransom in exchange for her safe departure.
In response, university officials defended the activist claiming they were "peacefully protesting."
Gaines announced last week she has filed a lawsuit against the university.
