An Ironman competitor drowned during the swimming part of the race at Harmony Lake in Rocky View County, Alberta, on Sunday.
Local RCMP came to Rocky View County on Sunday morning following a report of a suspected drowning, according to CTV News. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered volunteers had rescued a 47-year-old man from the water.
The Ontario man, who has not been identified, died despite the life-saving efforts of volunteers and EMS. "The actual swimming part of the race was at the new Harmony Lake community just outside of Calgary," said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff of the Cochrane RCMP. "At 7:55 am, our detachment received a complaint that one of the volunteers had located somebody in the water."
RCMP have notified the drowning victim's next of kin and contacted the medical examiner to confirm the man's cause of death.
Despite the incident, the Ironman race is expected to continue.
