On Monday, Sayfullo Saipov, the ISIS-affiliated man who was convicted of murdering eight people and wounding an additional eleven after he drove a truck down a New York City bike path, was sentenced to life in prison after a federal jury could not come to a unanimous verdict for the death penalty.
According to Fox News, Assistant US Attorney Amanda Houle had said to the jury that Saipov was a "proud terrorist" and "He chose to come to this country and fight for an enemy. And it is his choices that call for the most significant punishment that the law provides: the sentence of death."
David Patton, Saipov's defense attorney, told the jury, which was made up of three women and nine men, "meeting death with more death is not the answer" for his client.
Patton said Saipov would spend the rest of his life in an "isolated, solitary" jail located in Florence, Colorado.
According to the New York Times, Saipov's attack was on Oct. 31, 2017 when he drove a rented Home Depot truck down the bike path in NYC located between the West Side Highway and the Hudson river.
In January, Saipov, an Uzbekistan citizen, was convicted on 28 counts in a federal court and the charges included supporting a terrorist organization and murder.
After his arrest, Saipov confessed to the FBI and said he attacked the pedestrians on behalf of ISIS.
According to the New York Post, Assistant US Attorney Alexander Li, another prosecutor, said "It was a scene of destruction and horror. Mangled bicycles covered the path. The riders — human beings — lay unconscious or dead. Survivors staggered around, wounded and dazed, searching for family and friends"
According to Fox News, New York has not executed an inmate for a federal crime in nearly 70 years."
